Intelligent Mail (IMb) barcodes are a vital component of USPS’ service, allowing mailers to track their mail throughout its entire processing. These barcodes provide more information than previous versions and take up the same amount of space on the envelope.
USPS has outlined specific guidelines for IMb barcodes to ensure that they can be easily read by their scanners and tracked throughout the mail stream. These guidelines include:
The first step in this tutorial is to download the special USPS barcode font that is needed for generating IMb barcodes. You can do this by following this link to view all of the available fonts on the USPS website, scrolling down to find the “uspsFontsNonAFP-1.4.0.zip” font, and agreeing to the user agreement that opens in a new window.
Next, you will need to install the Adobe(r) Acrobat(r), and the AutoMailMerge(tm) plug-in. Once both have been installed, you will need to create a PDF form that contains the proper fields for filling in name/address data and coded IMb text. You will then merge this form with your data source, and then use the resulting PDF to create your mailing labels that contain IMb barcodes.
